Front axle spacer??

Post by johnod »

I installed 82 prolink forks/yokes on my 79, along with prolink calipers which had already been installed.
Still using what I assume is the 79 wheel.
When I install axle speedo drive, spacer, and axle nut, there is still about 3/4" of play, ie. I can slide the axle back and forth, side to side, in the wheel about 3/4".

That can't be right can it?

Have I missed some important thing?
I don't think any part is lost.

Thanks

The collar/spacer on the right side is different between 79 and Prolink, but I can't say off-hand whether this is the reason for your issue.
The axle itself is also different. I don't know which axle parts you are using

No, collars are the same for all years - it's the axle that's different. Pro-Link axle is longer to reflect the spacing of the 39mm forks. Once you get the correct axle, everything will bolt up.

Let's see whether I have that wrong again:

He uses the Prolink forks with the clamps, ergo Prolink spacing. He should need the longer axle, but he says his axle is too long....???

Nope didn't say the axle was too long.
It seems the spacer is too short.

Or at least that's how it seems.
Have ordered an 82 axle and spacer, hopefully some combo of parts will fit.

The "spacer" on the left side is the same for CBX-Z/A and Prolinks. There is a sleeve on the right side that goes on the axle before you screw the sleeve-type nut on it. That is different between the two versions. Again, I don't know if that causes your problem. I assume you are using a stock CBX-Z (79) axle and parts?

Mike:

I don't have a Pro-Link set-up here at the moment to compare, but you might be right on the right-side spacer. But never-the-less, you have to use the Pro-Link axle with Pro-Link forks. The hub width for the early and late wheels is the same, so if John is using a Pro-Link axle and early spacer, and assuming the spacers are different, the axle assembly won't tighten up on the wheel when the right-side nut is screwed on. Not too many other variables there. Sorry if I was off-base on the spacers.

Yes I think the spacer on the right side is the problem.
I am using a 79 wheel, and I bought a used 82 axle and spacer on Ebay, so just waiting for that now.

I think between that, and the parts I have it should all go together.

Thanks for all the help.

Well for anybody who might find this of use.

The prolink axle, and right side spacer are BOTH longer than the 79 pieces.

You need both for the install of prolink forks on a 79.

Depending on what wheel you are using. For my 1983 cb1100f wheel on pro link forks and triple clamps, I needed a CB1100f axle due to the different speedo drive thickness. ( thanks Dave).
I think posting your information for others is a good plan. Just be sure to include the whole list.

Agreed, a nice concise but complete summary of what you learned, maybe tucked into an edit of your first post would be really valuable content for those that would like to follow in your footsteps. TIA for sharing what you learned.

Well ok...

Here's what I learned.

79 bike
Installed prolink forks, yokes, axle, and right side spacer, those are the parts you'll need.
Using the original 79 wheel.

Also needed are new handle bars , or you might be able to get your originals reamed to larger size, I think that might be unsafe though.
As well the 79 fender mount holes will need to be opened up a bit to fit the new forks, just a little file work required.
I already had prolink calipers and aftermarket rotors on the bike so I can't comment on any need to change those if you have 79 calipers.
The 82 top yoke is tapped for the instrument cluster mount , the 79 used through bolts and nuts, but these will work on the 82 yoke.

I've found I need to change the clutch cable as it's now too short, BUT, I have/had, the sport kit bars, and the new bars ( Honda, but can't remember from what) are slightly different shape.
I imagine if you start with the regular bars ,and depending what you replace them with you might not have to do change the clutch cable.

I think that covers everything.

I rebuilt the fork as well, very simple, a piece of 1.5 inch ABS pipe worked well as a seal and bushing driver.
Almost all the parts for the job are still available OEM from the dealer at this time.

Mike Nixon has covered the yoke install elsewhere in the forum.

Hope someone might find this of use sometime.

Thanks everyone for all the help/answers in my various posts while doing this job.

Now I just need some summer. :-)
