81 rear suspesion light on

Post by cbxturbo »

I am helping a friend with his low mile 81 (only 2000)..
The red rear suspension warning light is on 80% of the time. I am not familiar with the air suspension as I have a 79 CBX.
What should I look for, are there any common issues?

How safe /unsafe is it to ride with the light on?

Thanks

There is a pressure fitting on the right side below the helmet holder. It is covered with a small knurled chrome cap. Take it off and put air into the rear shock. Spec says 28 - 57 PSI

Swifty,

I know lots of guys who run upwards of 80 psi in the rear. You know many of then too.

They claim it really improves the handling.

Either garage is too small or we have too many bikes. Or Momma's car needs to go outside.

Also, make sure your friend hasn't lowered the mileage of his '81 by putting a 150 mph speedo from a '79 on the bike. This will cause the light to stay on.

i had the exact same problem on my '81 i restored. i would fill the shock with air and check every so often and it was indeed holding pressure. the light would come on and off intermittently but mostly on. i removed the sending unit and when i did some rust colored fluid spilled out of it. i sprayed contact cleaner into the opening in the sender overnight then i dumped that and sprayed some WD40 into it over nite again. i then dumped the residual fluid out and re-installed and the problem went away. good luck!
