Is my exhaust manifold trying to say something?

Post by Kool_Biker »

I had my lhs exhaust removed earlier on today, and noticed some exhaust 'blow by' in all 3 manifolds.
I wonder, if this absolutely fine and to be expected, OR an indication that my exhaust nuts are not tight enough?

You will notice I am using the recommended aftermarket exhaust seals.

Aris: I don't know which exhaust seals are "recommended", but my experience is, that some (especially the non-copper, collapsable ones) require a higher torque to seat properly. Be careful, though, you may pull the studs out of the aluminum. I have two motors here which required the stud threads to be repaired.

Upon installation of any new gaskets, re-torquing is required a couple of times in the first few hundred miles. They always loosen up. So I'd tighten them down as you would normally, run a few miles, then check again. They should not leak at all.

Sorry Mike, I meant the eBay sourced fibre gaskets which were recommended to me by someone on the site ..
Thanks both of you for the info above. As I read your answers, the carbon deposits above are proof of SOME leakage, which nevertheless should not be there.
Therefore need repeated but careful re-tightening of the nuts.
