Pipemasters---Anyone?

Hope someone can clarify this for me:

I recently looked at an '82 with a new set of these pipes. The head pipes looked more like chrome than stainless. A bud of mine says that some of these pipes were made in all stainless and some were a mixture of chrome and stainless. Is this correct? Also, some of the pipes were blued near the head. Can this be removed? I suspect the bluing is from the owner letting the bike warm up with the choke engaged for an extended period of time. Is re-jetting necessary or recommended for these pipes?

In my opinion the Pipemasters are junk. They leak at the collectors. They also do not have the ability to remove baffles. I would recomend the Power Flows from south Africa. They are all SS and they are one piece from the front to the rear. They also have removable baffels. This is my 2 cents worth and others would agree and disagree. The head pipes are chrome, the mufflers stainless.

They're available either way - With chrome headpipes (which can turn blue) or in 100% stainless for an additional charge

The all stainless version will eventually turn a light golden color - But a quick wetsanding with #2000 wet or dry sandpaper during your annual bike cleanup will have them looking like new polished chrome again in just a few minutes

Junk? Of all the 6 into 6 pipes I've ever seen, these are the top of the heap. Great quality and they fit the bike like no others. Peter Gray has been making these for many years and he's always improving on them. They're designed to come apart easily, but if you want them 100% leak free, Peter recommends you use a little muffler sealant at the joints when you put them together - I've had mine on and off the bike several times and thanks to their well thought out design, it's only a few minute job to remove or reinstall them. Instead of muffler sealant, I wrap the headpipes with a little aluminum AC duct tape before I slide them into the collectors which makes then nearly leak free and yet still able to come apart easily

Pipemasters... With respect, I must partially dissagree with my dear friend Louis. Mine are chromed headers & collectors with stainless mufflers. Fit & finish are good, not perfect but with a bit of tweaking, align well. The sound is glorious & once heard all the small niggles pass. I have just had mine triple chromed ( chrome wasn't bad but it's just me being ...well you know) & I went about polishing the mufflers & all came up very well. Leaking headers? well, I always use high temp silicone as long as no Lambda sensors are about & it does well. Would I recommend them to a friend ?? Yes...Nothing sounds like a CBX on full song with Pipemasters.....

I filled out Pipemasters on line request for a quote a couple of weeks ago and havent gotten a response. Does anyone know how long it usually takes to get a response from them? Will I have to rejet my carbs?

I've got to dis-agree with you Louis. I've seen many PipeMaster systems and they are great systems.........and many other X owners really like theirs.

And even though I'm selling mine off my 80X that are wonderful......it's only because I bought a complete stainless steel set of PipeMasters to replace them.

I paid too much for mine at the time I bought them and rather than losing a bunch of money, I will keep them. Pipemasters will fit the Prolinks, but you will have to give up the saddlebags.
