Clutch switch function

What is the function of the clutch switch?
It appears to be in the starter solenoid circuit, parallel with the neutral light. There is a diode in there somewhere to stop a back feed from one of them?
So if you stall the bike in gear, you can pull the clutch in & operate the starter button to get the engine running again?
You don't need to pull the clutch in to start the engine if it is in neutral?

It's to stop you trying to start the bike when in gear UNLESS the clutch is pulled in. If in Neutral, then starts with / without clutch.

The diode is in the headlight case of the early models and under the tank of the late models.

Hmm, so apparently my clutch switch is screwed up because my bike will not start unless its in neutral and clutch in.
