Alternator chirp

Post by whatscooking »

The alternator on my 79 had oil seeping so in I went replacing bearings seals and brushes. I have read some post about alternators making a chirp noise. I heard the noise in mine after the rebuild BUT I have heard it before long ago. I was raised on a large farm so we had every sort of equipment to operate and maintain. I remember getting off of tractors at night and you could see into the end of the generator while the engine was running. The brushes would be throwing sparks and making that chirping noise. Turning the lights on and off would affect the noise.

The chirp could originate with a sacked spring.
If you can't get a new spring i have seen a second washer added. Not ideal but a quick fix.
