Wiring harness problems.

Post by steve murdoch icoa #5322 »

After riding my '81 the other day i parked the bike, stopped the engine with the kill switch and forgot to turn off the ignition switch.
Come back a couple days later, see that the ignition is still on but figure the battery is low from the dashboard lights.
After charging the battery, turn the ignition on and nothing. Check the main fuse and sure enough it is blown
Replace the fuse, turn on the ignition and instantly get smoke creeping out from under the tank.
Take the tank off and find a scorched wiring harness. The protective sleeve is split in a few places and there are some exposed wires. Decent amount of heat i'd say.
So, after that long-winded and boring description what am i looking at?
I would have thought leaving the ignition on would have just drained the battery, not drawn enough power to burn wires and blow a main fuse.

That sucks. I can vouch for the quality of Phil's repro harnesses, but I can't recall if he has them for ProLinks. Sorry to hear that Steve.

Sorry that I only have a twin shock harness. On the up side, I am certain that several of our used parts vendors will have some school bike harnesses.
Good luck,
Phil
When you are up to your ass in alligators it is sometimes difficult
to remember that your objective was to drain the swamp !!
