Some Advice please?
Hello All, Any advice on how to proceed. My 81 at startup, no headlight and high beam indicator light on. After a half mile everything returns to normal. Shut the engine down and the same problem reoccurs. I have checked all of the grounds. Could it be in switch or a relay? Thanks Bill Atkins Bluffton SC.

Re: Some Advice please?
You were right whatscooking. No voltage to headlight at ignition. Do you suspect contact switch Base? it seems to test out according to the shop manual. Thanks again. Bill

Have you checked both sides of fuses between handlebars?

Re: Some Advice please?
All fuses are hot. Headlight comes on and High beam indicator light goes off after about a 1/2 of a mile. I. will check all wiring again. Must be something loose. Thanks Bill

Electric is like a water hose, you are plugged up somewhere. Start working backwards. Just because the connections are tight don't mean the juice is getting through.

Re: Some Advice please?
Try this if you're feeling adventurous:
Grab a couple of peanut butter jars, fill one 2/3 with white vinegar, add a half-cup of table salt, stir till dissolved.
Fill the other 2/3 with water, then add a half cup of baking soda, stir till dissolved.
Grab a dozen q-tips (cotton ear swabs)
Get a tube of silicone dielectric grease, ake "bulb grease"
Take apart all the connections, swab out the worst of the grime with a q-tip, dunk the connectors into the vinegar solution for 2 minutes, swish it about. Try to just dunk the connector, don't stuff the wires in there as much as you can help it.
After two minutes, take it out, wrap it in a paper towel, give it a shake to get the bulk of the solution off it, dunk it into the baking soda solution for 30 sec. Remove, shake off, maybe blast it out with compressed air. use a q tip to swab out any residual grime in connectors or in the clear sleeves on the bullet connectors.
Now take a clean swab with dielectric grease, swab the now-bright copper spades with a little grease, reassemble. Work your way through the bike like this and you will solve or prevent many gremlins in the wiring.

I could have used a jar of that when I was first getting my bike together.
