Starter wont turn when engine is hot

I have a problem with starting the engine when it is hot. The starter motor only turns 2-3 turns very slowly - like something is braking it and prevent it to spin freely. When engine is cold or cooled more down, the starter motor spins fine and start the engine right away. The power on the battery is in good condition. Any idea what prevents my starter motor to spin when engine is hot ?

Could be time for a starter motor rebuild.

How about things expand with heat and if it has never been cleaned/rebuilt there is 50 years of brush dust and dirt that MIGHT be clogging things up.

That was also my first thought Steve, everything is cleaned and new brushes mounted. Still wont turn when engine is hot. I agree, that something could expand due to heat...

Even though you think your battery is fine, try another. I had the same symptoms once, just before the battery died.
