Does anyone have a source for replacing wire harness tape with the correct type? I don't simply want to use electrical tape if there is a better product available.

I always use 3-M black (electrical) tape. It's the best in the business. We use boxes and boxes of it at work and it holds up under any and all conditions. If that's not available, buy the best brand-name you can find.

Check Eastern Beaver. He's in Japan.
Or Vintage Connections (here in USA). He also has original sleeving and connectors.
