full choke, opens throttle plates

Post by pouchy750 »

I've got the carbs off the 1979 CBX1000 for the fourth time, the bike just doesn't want to start / run properly.
I've had the bike out 3 times since the rebuild & it has performing badly each time, actually getting worse.
It won't start, it doesn't pull, it won't rev out & it stalls.
I've checked that I do have fuel flow to the carbs.
With the carbs off, I'm looking at the choke mechanism & it appears to open the throttle at full on. How far should the throttle plates open when the choke is fully on?
Mine only open a fraction, is this correct?
There doesn't appear to be any adjustment there to get the throttle plates more open.
Any suggestions please.

That's the fast idle feature and it is adjustable - you really need Mike Nixon's book and maybe a shop manual also. Yours is fine where it's at. I don't think adjustment is your problem - plugged up circuits likely the issue. Assuming everything else related is up to snuff. There are volumes written here about carb issues.

I don't know how I missed this adjustment first time round, it is way off.
In the manual it states to bend the forked tang plate to get the recommended clearance.
But on my 1979 carbs there is another single tang plate that is adjacent & a tight side fit to the top part of the forked tang plate.
I bent that other tang to get the correct choke idle adjustment.
Did I do that correctly?

No, but it's probably no big deal. Don't worry about the fast idle - you shouldn't be using it anyway.
