79 air filter question

Post by neilx7 »

hi,
I have a UK 1979 model cbx which i think has had the airfilter changed for a later modle cbx,
as when i looked into ordering a replacement airfilter for a 79, is looks like a foam filter and not the one that is on the bike see pic.
if i am correct is there any reason for doing this mod.

cheers
neil

The paper filter as used in the Prolink CBXes is a little easier to maintain and service. You don't have to oil the foam element and you avoid having pieces of the deteriorating foam element in your intake. Although the paper filter is relatively inexpensive to replace, I have on occasion, cleaned and reused it.

Nothing wrong with using the paper element in the early models. Problem with converting back to original is you need the wire mesh frame (NLA from Honda) and the foam sock (also recently NLA, at least here in the US). I was lucky to find a couple of foam socks, but getting replacements down the road is going to be tough.
