New here! 1979 chain and sprocket ???

Post by WildmanCBX »

Hi! New here and this is my first post. I have a 1979 CBX that still has the 630 chain and sprockets. I want to do the 530 conversion. Been doing some reading and I think I have it figured out but thought someone here could tell me exactly what I need to know. It appears I can go with a 1980-1982 setup (18t front/42t rear) and use a 108 link chain. Can anyone tell me if this is correct? I found sprockets at cbxperformance.com and it's the only place that says "this is what you need to put a 530 chain on your '79. Maybe not word for word  but essentually. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

oh, and a little about me. I'm a motorcycle enthusiest from Southern Indiana. Love vintage Hondas. I love bringing old bikes back to life and putting them back on the road. I pretty much do all my own work. Paint, fab, and most mechanical. I had two '79's but sold one to fund getting this one back on the road. I'm building a 1971 Honda CL 350 Cafe racer at the moment.

Welcome!

I'm pretty sure your length will end up shorter - I want to say 104 with a stock swingarm, but EMS or Dave or a half dozen others will confirm.

Post photos of your projects or they didn't happen :-). Particularly the cafe bike.

Sincerely, welcome.

I am probably the wrong person to respond, having just declared that 18/42 was the stock final drive for the '79  , but it has been a long time that I have used a 630 and made the conversion from 630 to 530.
It seems to me that 102 to 104 links is the proper amount. Can't really remember either. I always buy a longer chain and then cut the links to the length that seems approbiate on the bike. With almost everybody fiddling with different swingarms on the 79/80 it is hard to keep track what is right for what.

Wild, I'm going with 102 links, only because my bike with the 1100F swingarm ended up at 104, but that's not for sure. Could one of the '79 owners running a 530 chain chime in?

Thanks guys! My thought was to get a longer chain and remove the links to get the right length. My main thing was finding out for sure that the newer model cbx 530 sprockets were a direct swap.

I'll have got post up some pics this weekend. The cafe racer project is somewhat in the re-assembly stage. Hope to have it in rolling form soon and I'll get some good pics.

I can't confirm for sure right now, but my recollection is 104 links for the '79-'80 with the 18/42 combo.

Just ordered my sprockets from CBX Performance and a nice gold chain. Got one with 120 links. I'll make a neclace out of the extra! Going to try to drag my sick but out to the garage and get a good pic of the CBX and my Cafe racer project. Darn flu bug!

Consider coming to Mid-Ohio for Vintage Days next month. We'll have a large club presence there for you to check out. Not too far for you. Hope to see you there!
