79 CBX getting it running again

Post by tylerf179 »

Hey everyone! I'm new here. Here's a link telling you how I came across this project.

viewtopic.php?f=108&t=9826

Anyways, I have a 1979 CBX 1000 I think I have heard 1100, 1050 and now I have been seeing things like 1000Z so I'm not really sure what it is ill post pictures of the bike including the VIN#.

So the Bike was parked kinda running since 2003. It was indoors about the first 5 years then outside covered for the next 5 and then uncovered for the rest so almost all the plastic in the wiring harness and brake reservoirs, and some of the hoses has been rotted away and it will just crumble in your hands. I put a new battery on it to see if anything would happen and I got nothing no lights on the cluster or turn signals it was dead. Probably from the bad wiring harness. Then I put power direct to the starter to see if it would turn it did engine has oil in it no water in the cylinders or oil so that's good. The carbs are probably needing a rebuild kit. Also when my dad was riding it back in 2003 he used a screw driver on the solenoid to start it because I think the start switch was bad and is still bad.

My plan is to just get it running then eventually restore it. I'm thinking I will start with a new wiring a Harness to see if I can get some life to it and a spark then a carb rebuild, all new cables (choke is broken and others are gummed up) and reservoirs, a good cleaning check engine and change oil then maybe start it up.

Any ideas on where to get the best shop manual?

Is this a good plan? Does anyone think I should do something different, let me know what you think.
Any advice or suggestions is great thank you.

Lots of good stuff to read in the Technical Library to help with your rebuild.
Some very knowledgable guy's here to help when the library can't or is unclear.
Got my Honda CBX-6 repair book from a reprinter on Ebay.

Looks like a 79 to me.
The CBX-6 has a displacement of 1047cc.
Some people round up and call it a either a 1050cc or 1100cc
Most people including Honda round down and call it a 1000cc
Honda added the red Roman Numeral X (to denote 1000 ) to the CB thus CBX
The 1000z means it was made in Japan not in the USA plant in Ohio. Bike,s made in the USA plant(most 1980 models) have a 1000A designation or for 1981/82 bike,s 1000B. The Silver colour was only available in 79. Also the lack of a lockable compartment in the tail section means its likely a 79.
Provide us with an engine #no (back of the engine case just above the starter) and that will confirm it as a 79.

No need for the engine number, it is a '79. the VIN number clearly id's it. It also means it was build in June of 1978, which is also shown in the right upper corner of the VIN-plate as 6/78.
The engine number will be difficult to see, it is on top of the primary housing behind the clutch housing and will likely be between CB1E-20 05300 and CB1E-20 05500

The instruments, speedometer and tachometer, in addition to many other things, like the color, also say it is a 1979.

CB-1 VIN numbers are 1979 models, SC03 VIN numbers are 1980 models of which approximately 2,000 (from VIN number SC03-20 00001 to SC03-20 02000 or so) were made in Japan in June and July 1979 and another 3,000 (from VIN number SC03-20 10001 to SC03-13400 or so) were made in Marysville, Ohio from September 1979 through maybe May 1980.

1981 models can be identified by their VIN numbers with SC06..BC. (produced from January through May 1981) and 1982 models by SC06..CC.. (produced from May 1981 through November 1981)

In all countries outside the U.S. and Canada, Honda used the moniker CBX-Z for the '79, CBX-A for the 1980 models and CBX-B for 1981 and CBX-C for 1982 models to identify the variations in their parts documentations.
Within the specific part numbers, the product code for 1979 is 422, for 1980 it is 469 and for 1981 and 1982 it is MA2.

Is the exhaust solid?
I would contact Phil about a wiring harness. They are excellent quality.

Get an original shop manual if you can, worth the extra 50 or so dollars IMO.

I bought a reprint off the internet while its a huge help the photo reproduction is poor quality and often you can't make out what the text is referring to, a single clear picture can be invaluable. And my copy was missing the cable and wiring diagrams which would've come in handy.
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage

Great info! Ill ordering new switches and a harness soon along with a manual. All I know is the exhaust is not the factory exhaust because the original ones are laying in the garage.

I have read that one of the original manuals had a image wrong for cam and timing chain how do I know what to look out for on that?
Also looking for a seat and fairing, all new cables, brake reservoirs, and a carb kit. I've found most this stuff on a bunch of different sites like TIMS, Bike Bandit, Used CBX Parts, Ebay and others but not sure who to use what's the difference from each vendor, Price? quality?

Thank you all for the help

Pages 6-21 and 6-22 in the manual have to be dated later than March 1978. I am not exactly sure when the revised issues first appeared (mine are August 1978), but May 1978 is probably O.K.

Alright I have the shop manual and the harness and both left and right switches on the way. Hopefully I will get spark after the harness is installed.
