Exhaust Brackets
Got the replacement exhaust bracket - but it's exactly the same as the one I have! Not sure whether I was just sent the wrong one, or I have a different problem.
Dave (or any one else), can you recognise whether this bracket is the "good" one or the "bad" one: Any ides if this is the correct bracket or not?
Paul.

Can't say for sure, but it looks like the standard bracket. I have a boxed new set here that has both brackets in it, but they are boxed up and a bit inaccessible right now. Are you sure that is exactly what you already have? There is a clear difference in the replacement bracket and it works.

Yes - I now have two right hand brackets that are the same, both result in the right hand silencer being higher than the left (I did try both brackets!)

Centre Stand Update
Whilst rebuilding the bike, I'd had the centre stand on a block of wood - it gave more clearance while working on it. What I hadn't realised is that once I put the bike on the stand as normal, it was impossible to get it back off the stand as both wheels were firmly on the ground!
I already had another centre stand, but was from a different model, so wasn't sure whether it would fit OK: It is both narrower, and not as tall as the one on the bike. Don't know whether it's off an A model, or whether different stands were fitted to the Z during it's production run?
It fits OK - doesn't quite give the same clearance of the back wheel off the ground, but is much easier to get it on the stand. It is also a much better fit with the sankei exhaust - the stand lines up with the rubber stops better. So, problem solved: The original stand stop plates had collapsed by quite some way. I glued a couple of plates on them just to see how far off they were - I will get them welded before using again: That's side and centre stands sorted!

The stand on the right is the correct stand - the wrong one was fitted previously.

Looks like my original centre stand may not be off a CBX then? Looks very similar, and fits reasonably well, so must be of the same period, off a CB900F or something? The spring lug is also wrong - its attached to the inside of the leg, whereas on the other stand the lug is more on the outside - so the spring clears the rear wheel.daves79x wrote:The stand on the right is the correct stand - the wrong one was fitted previously.

Exhaust Update
I've spent some time getting the exhaust heights lined up.
With judicious use of a dremel, I adjusted the brackets on both the left and right hand sides to get them lined up. Seems to have done the trick: One more problem sorted.

Engine / Carb Update
I sync'd the carbs - they were pretty close after the bench sync, only adjustment needed was +/- a quarter turn on the adjusters.
Only issue was access to the adjuster on carb #6. I couldn't get clear access due to the frame being in the way. Is there a knack to getting at this one, or do I have a different problem?
Not sure it idles any better after sync'ing, but its done anyway.
Also did a compression test afterwards - hot engine, open throttle all cylinders were in the range 155 - 160 PSI. Is that pretty normal?

Nice work getting the exhaust sorted, Paul.
Those compression numbers are good.

Very nice. I'm a bit jealous of that photo - my seat unit is canted a bit. This makes me want to get it squared up.jnnngs wrote:Exhaust Update

Honda makes a short adjusting tool for the 5-6 adjuster.

Carb tool # 07908-4600200
I don't know if they are still available from Honda.

Finished Article
The bike has finally taken a trip out to get it's MOT (road worthiness test in the UK). Everything was OK and it passed. Bike rode / performed well on the way there and back, everything seemed to be as it should be.
So, I am calling this project finished!
Final pictures: Thanks everyone for your help and guidance along the way - really appreciated!
