Japan made 80

Post by CopperCollar »

Well I am ready to begin this project.

I started by hauling it from storage to a garage I am using. I first made a pit stop at a local car wash and cleaned as much of the accumulated dirt and grease off her as I could then began the assessment.

I'll post pictures after I upload them. Every bike has a story to tell if we take time to look for it and this one has not had a great life. First clue was the severe wear of the passenger peg rubber. Most bike have pretty pristine passenger peg rubber. Another give away was the shifter rubber as it was nearly worn away and the aluminum tip of the shifter was well polished and worn by boots.

There of course was the usual wiring cutting and splicing and wrong bolts, screws and etc. used elsewhere throughout the bike. The rear fender inner and outer are toast, tail light is in equally bad condition.

No tank, side covers or tail piece at least the headlight shell is repairable. Both handlebar switches will need to be replaced, all the wiring and cables, all the brake lines, all rubber components will need replacement and the instruments will need refurb. The brake masters and calipers will need replacement, chain, sprockets and so on. Battery box was rusted out, igniters are toast, alternator cover is cracked, no exhaust system came with her and the exhaust studs are either snapped off or stripped out of the head, cam chain adjuster bolt is gone and the whole filled with JB weld. Cam end caps are gone, carburetors will need to be gone through, the idle screw is gone and most if not all of the carburetors screws are stripped out.

So this old girl was by no means a garage queen, more like a pavement princess.

I was able to turn her over at the crank so I ran compression checks, as expected stuck valves and stuck or worn rings.

I have formulated a pretty basic plan of attack.

Take the engine out and set it aside for my winter project, a complete and thorough rebuild will be needed.

The running frame will be the easiest to start with. So I will strip the frame down to essential components first then begin the rebuild.

Pictures to follow.

Holy cow ! Doesn't sound like much came with this one, and the things that did are in a sorry state.
Still, looks like we'll have a bit of reading to do in the near future.
Go Mike !

You already have Nils.
I will be getting that tank, side covers, front fender and tail piece to the painters in the future, thanks for the help there.

Thumbs up for saving another one, Mike.
I am sure there are plenty of quality Pirate names left for your new resto.

Finally !
This 80 had to have a ton of riding two up done. The rear foot pegs are pretty worn:

A lot of wear to the front pegs and the shifter as well:

This is the idle set screw....LOL:

Alternator cover cracked:

Ingenious float bowl screw repair:

Typical fuse bypass:

Melted connection at the rectifier:

Missing and broken exhaust studs:

Check out the master cylinder reservoir:

Wrong speedo and broken tach:

I did find a wee bit more history on this bike, it was sold to a junk yard by it's owner, the guy I bought it from heard about it and went to the junk yard and bought it back and put it in his garage, this was about 14 years ago.

Engine will need to come apart as the compression was really bad. I knew this going into it though. I will stay on course by restoring the rolling chassis first then turn to on the engine which will be the big dollar work.

I appreciate the kudo Nils. There are many masters here though and I continue learning from each one of them.

I just can't part the bikes out. I find some peace of mind when I am in the garage working on these bikes . Even the most tedious things give me a realm of peace. I think the CBX's I have repaired saved me and not I them.

I have four more to go after this one....

Love the nut and bolt on the carb float bowl.
Have you decided if it will be a wild or mild resto?

Hey Steve!

I will strive for as close to stock restoration as I can afford using and refurbishing as much of the stock components as possible.

I haven't firmly picked a name for it but I believe the Japanese word for TRANSFORMATION/ METAMORPHOSIS is appropriate. I have found four words thus far and need to research more on the translation but here they are. HENKEI, HENSEI, HENTAI, KASEI AND HENSHIN.

Anyone here speak Japanese that can help with the proper translation?

Mike:

Very nice! Is that a black body set you had or did you just have it painted? I see you found a good zinc plater also. Did you solve your swingarm bearing issue, or just install it as was? Looking forward to seeing more progress!

Thanks Dave, the guy I bought the 80 from called me and said he didn't find the spare key but had this body work if I wanted it....well of course...it looks better in the photo than it is but I think I can get a professional painter to buff it out and it would be acceptable. He said the body work was off another 80 he had.

The swinger I pulled bearings out of another swing arm.

The rest is just hard work with a polishing wheel.
