how to remove the oil filter screen

Post by itsacbx »

Hey all, I started dismantling my engine today, and woe is me the inside is absolutely filthy, with piles of oil grunge in every orifice, which at the every least suggests a shortage of filter changes...
However, can someone tell me how to remove the oil screen please? Its lodged on tight and I don't want to go levering on it at all, as other than being coated with crap, its still in one piece..........
Thanks

Have you split the cases?

If so, take the complete oil pump out first so the filter is much easier to access - it can be done in situ from the the sump but is much harder.

Then use lots of heat (not enough to melt it obviously!) on the plastic outer, and prise it off very carefuly. They can be very brittle, so it may not surve being taken off...

Paul.

Even with heat and a gentle touch mine fell apart when i removed it.
Sourcing a new one may be difficult as Honda Canada says there are nla.
No doubt the usual vendors have them.

You can get a new screen here: http://www.sixcenter.nl/onderdelen/deta ... ?aid=99358

I imagine Louis here in the US still has them also.

yep, all good...its off in one piece....
Now Im tackling separating the cases, the original Honda glue has sure done its job....
Any thoughts or comments on how to separate the cases other than gentling inserting very small flat bladed implements between the cases and applying gentle heat all around....
Yes, all the bolts are out.....

It’s usually easy to separate the cases. Are you SURE you have all the bolts out?

Including the ones from the top?

once again common sense got in the way uf using a bigger hammer, and after I removed the lost bolt it almost [well I say almost] fell apart...
Main Bearings are within spec, inside the engine is extremely clean, so all the junk in the crank well was obviously from have the rods and crank exposed to all manner of storage crap over the years which also supports the contention that one should never dismantle an engine until one is really ready to work on it, but that clearly wasnt the previous owners philosophy at the very least.......
Now Ive started to buy assorted parts and the pain is really starting to hit my back pocket. You say six of everything at 'vintage' prices????
